Exploring Careers in Communication Design

Communication Design, Visual Communication, and Graphic Design are closely related fields, but they have key differences in focus and scope. All programs in the School of Design are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). Abstract painters express themselves through their art, leaving the viewer to interpret the work however they want. In many ways, the art is more about the viewer’s experience than about the actual art itself.

At the University of Cincinnati, Communication Design students receive a foundation in visual problem-solving. These courses help students develop critical and visual thinking along with essential design processes. Students also have opportunities to further develop in specific areas of interest (including graphic design, interaction design, and motion design). The internet has become an essential part of many people’s lives, and as such, new websites are created every day. Designers are needed to build effective sites that flow well, have visuals that communicate specific messages, and function on many different devices. They aim to take photographs that tell the story of that issue or event, in either a microcosmic or macrocosmic way. In addition, photojournalists write captions for their photography, and some will also write accompanying articles. Some photojournalists write books as well, informing their audience about issues using both photography and written text. As video content becomes increasingly prevalent in digital communication, proficiency in video editing is beneficial.

To create effective products, they need to understand the psychology behind visual elements and how they can affect someone’s mood. Therefore, it expands its focus beyond user-experiences to user-networks.[8] Students learn how to combine communication with art and technology. The communication design discipline involves teaching how to design web pages, video games, animation, motion graphics, and more. For years, graphic design was really the only term people used to express visual design. It can encompass the entire field of using visuals to deliver a message, or it can be used to discuss a specific, small part of design. Some people may use graphic design in the context of layout and composition, and also use it to only refer to the tools of creating graphics, like Photoshop. When a marketing department brings in a graphic designer, they are often hiring them to handle one specific task of design creation instead of handling the entire marketing campaign.

Marketable skills include interpersonal, cognitive, and applied skill areas valued by employers and are primary or complementary to a major. The marketable skills goal was designed to help students articulate their skills to employers. By the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board requirements, UNT has identified the marketable skills for all of its degree programs. Although many communication designers use communication design to urge the viewer to take some sort of action (e.g., to buy a certain product), the job of a photojournalist is not to sell anything or urge any sort of action.
